I was recently reading a fellow machine quilters blog ( Suzanne E. ) about making her own grocery bags to cut back on her having to use the plastic bags at the stores, therefore helping the environment one little step at a time! Well my Aunt and I have been talking about doing this same thing for some time now but we just keep putting it off! I mean really how much trouble would it be to make some fabric bags for shopping??? However after reading the post on Suzanne’s Blog ( i will add a link to Suzanne’s Blog if she gives me permition to! ) it really got me thinking that now is the time! So following the link on her blog to the tutorial located on yet another blog at Crafster.org I printed off the directions and got to work!
The instructions confused me when I read them the first time but as I referred to them as I made this first bag they did make much more sense. The first bag has taken me about a hour and a half to make but I think now that I know the pattern it should go a lot faster! I’m thinking about making some of these at my quilting group ( the Nine Patcher’s ) next sewing day. I should be able to get a number of them done as long as I have them cut out before I get there and I think I’ll try doing some assembly line piecing.I’ve added some photos of my first bag below, please remember this was my sample bag so the fabric I used was pulled out of my “Why in the world did I buy this” stack of fabric. The next ones I make will be pretty I swear! If you want to see the photos at a larger scale just click on them and you will be taken to my Webshots on-line album were you can view them at higher resolution. this is a phot of the bag all folded up in its pocket, just like a Pillow Qilt would be!![]()
A front view of the bag, i put some batting in it to fill it out for the photo
And A Side View, remember, they end up being the same size as a average plastic shopping bag!
